"The technical manuals were far more developed and much easier to use than previous [versions]... I was quite pleased with the navigation and content," These remarks by the Military Liaison Officer for Submarine Combat System development programswere the result of an evaluation of technical manuals and training products used by today’s sailors, reflect the skills and expertise of ASFT Subject Matter Experts and Technical Writers. ASFT is a leader in the development of interactive electronic technical manuals within the submarine electronics community, converting traditional paper and PDF manuals into interactive documentation (U.S. Dept. of Defense Level 1-5 IETMs). Critical to system troubleshooting, equipment maintenance, and personnel training, these manuals contain high quality interactive graphics and media as well as detailed operation and maintenance procedures. ASFT enhancements include embedded training video clips depicting maintenance operations, which have been embraced by the Navy and well received by those who maintain the sophisticated electronic equipment.
ASFT personnel identified and filled a shortfall in the management of technical documentation and their associated revisions. Using standard tools such as Microsoft SharePoint© and the Inmedius© Content Management System, they successfully maintain dynamic repositories of simultaneous versions of their products both during development and as official archives, while maximizing efficiency through automated workflow tools and alerts. ASFT personnel with backgrounds in Knowledge Management and experience with technical writing are using DocBook© Website, an open XML standard, to keep life cycle maintenance costs down, while enforcing the structured hierarchy they seek.
ASFT continues to be a leader in the development of Interactive Electronic Technical Manuals (IETMs) for the United States Navy as well as the Royal Australian Navy. Combining their artistic skills, technical knowledge, and subject matter expertise, ASFT’s media development team is helping to pave the way for the future advancement of IETMs.
